The Costs of a Sedentary Lifestyle

In Mexico, seven out of ten adults and one out of three children are overweight or obese. Moreover, one in every three adults has high blood pressure, and Mexico has the highest rate of diabetes among members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). For the first time, the country’s life expectancy is at risk of declining.

This situation can be partly attributed to the sedentary lifestyle of the population. According to the 2012 National Survey on Health and Nutrition, three in every five children did not partake in a single competitive activity during the twelve months preceding the study. Furthermore, only one out of three children and teenagers spends less than two hours a day in front of a screen. One of the other two spends more than four hours a day in this sedentary activity. Besides, 81.6% of the activities carried out by adults during the day are sedentary or inactive.
